There’s that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach again. It’s something that tends to happen when I know that something ominous may well happen and there’s nothing that I or anyone can do about it. Whilst arriving early for work last night as I had several reports to get out of the way . I happened to surf the net to find out the latest NBA score with regard to the Spurs and the Hornets. All squared at two games apiece I thought that the Spurs (the team I support ) would be in the driver’s seat heading home for the two remaining games to be played in San Antonio.

As of now that’s the furthest thing from the truth as evidenced by last night’s disappointing play by the team overall. They were thoroughly outplayed and man handled by team that clearly wanted the victory more. And the Hornets played as if their lives depended on it ! There appeared to be no urgency on the part of this Spurs’ team and one wouldn’t certainly believe them to be the defending champions . If anything it was the Chris Paul led Charlotte Hornets who played like champions handing the Spurs a resounding defeat. Power forward David West had an All Star night with 38 points and 14 rebounds and his menacing presence on the court led to the Spurs’ complete disarray.

The margin of the loss notwithstanding 101-79, was as comprehensive the demolishing of a team as one would ever want to witness. No matter the level of competition or the endeavor of the sport in question. San Antonio were unravelled by the Hornets as though they were unwinding a ball of wool. And in witnessing the highlights of this I’m now beginning to wonder if this Greg Popovich coached team actually has the stomach for ensuing battle that’ll take place in San Antonio as of tomorrow night. They’ve had to twice fight back from a deficit in terms of games lost. The basketball god’s may not be willing to give them a third chance to redeem themselves once again. Facing elimination now with the Hornets holding a 3-2 lead in this best of seven games conference semi finals series. We may well be seeing the dethroning of the champions and the makings of a new powerhouse within the Western Conference. As if the conference itself isn’t already contentious enough !

And try as the Spurs may it has to be said that the Hornets have withstood all that the Spurs has thrown their way . If nothing else they’ve proved themselves immune to what the Spurs has shown in terms of their play and have been more than the champions’ equal. At times they’ve even surpassed the expectations that most thought that this team was capable of. If anything I for one believe that in some circles this team was underestimated as to how good they really are. The stellar play of MVP candidate Chris Paul and that of teammate David West has been exemplorary. And then when throws in the contributions of Tyson Chandler , Peja Stojackovic one can see why this team finished as the number three seed in the west. Should they defeat the Spurs at this juncture they will and should be considered a serious threat to whoever they’ll meet in the conference finals.

This New Orleans’ team plays with a passion not often seen from someone making a first appearance the postseason in its current incarnation. One has to remember as the Charlotte Hornets they were merely seen as the upstarts who roughed it out the likes of their Eastern Conference counterparts in the heydays of Alonzo Mourning , Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogues and P J Brown. That team was an allout physical team with very little time for any sort of finesse to their game. Now with this current New Orleans Hornets team we’re seeing athleticism , finesse and physical attributes that weren’t often associated with the franchise in its days in Charlotte.

The question one has to be asking now is what has and did go wrong for the Spurs at this juncture ? They’ve faced all sorts of adversity as champions and their pedigree is unquestioned. But on appearance their drive and will seems to have deserted them. One last ditch effort might not be enough to deter or derail this Hornets’ team . Who seem to be out on a mission to justify themselves as one the elite teams not just within their conference but the league as a whole. As and adversary thus far they’ve proved themselves more than equal to the task of facing and subduing the Spurs. San Antonio and their fans , myself included have got to be hoping that they can regroup and prove all the naysayers wrong who’ve stated that their time has come. The fat lady may well be waiting in the wings to sing her aria but until she launches into that high octave I’m not prepared to count them out as of yet. That sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach may not have unwound itself as of yet. But I can still live in hope can’t I ?

Greg Popovich as coach of the team has got to find a way now not just negating the play of Chris Paul but also David West. Those two players as much as anyone else on that team has contributed to the malaise of the Spurs throughought this series. On both ends of the floor the Hornets have often left the Spurs flatfooted and gasping for air. The elusiveness of Paul and West has left San Antonio chasing shadows for much of the series. And it certainly hasn’t helped that only Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili quite possibly on the Spurs have raised the level of their play in the series. Tim Duncan as the Spurs’ ever present leader has contributed some but nowhere near the level that’d be expected of the perennial All Star and future Hall of Famer. I’d hate to now think that he’s on the downside of what has been an illustrious career. But the wear and tear on his body might now just beginning to take its toll on the hero . One last effort from you Timmy is all that I’m asking for in the postseason then you can ride off into the sunset with your head held high.

Defensively we’ve been abysmal and those things can be dealt with, with the right adjustments abeing made . But there has to be some sort of semblance to the team’s resolve with regard to the task at hand. If nothing else just to show the fans that they’re not giving up without a fight. Two games to play and with everything on the line has got to be something worth fighting for ! Champions they are and I expect them to either go down fighting for their pride and that of their fans. The results at The Alamo weren’t that encouraging but then again they weren’t facing Santa Anna’s army of thousands. Here it’ll just be five guys out to prove a point.

Very nice read, Tophat!
The Spurs are in a must win. But this series deserves to go seven games, so I’m hoping San Antonio wins at home.
Still, at times they look old, or is it the Hormets look so young?
However things turn out, the Spurs have had a great run. And they sure made the Suns look pedestrian.
I’m somewhat the surprised that the Hornets have given them so much trouble. Usually it takes a young team like New Orleans a year or two to get over the proverbial hump.
That being said, I’d never count the Spurs out of any series.

At this juncture I don’t know that it’ll go seven games. The team seems to have lost its will to survive and win. They were ran ragged by the play of both West and Paul. That tells you all you need to know . It’s not as if the Spurs have been known as a lazy team on defense. But they were made to look pedestrian and rather pedantic by the Hornets.
It may well be more of the same upon the series’ resumption in San Antonio. Remember The Alamo this time around it could well be just as bad if not worse if they don’t get their act together !

God knows I’ve seen the ups and downs with this franchise ever since I first fell in love with this franchise. Upon my arrival here in the US to live permanently I was taken to a game by relatives. I became fascinated with what I saw and began to follow the team ever since.
The achievements in that time have been immense. But now I believe there’s a new chapter that’s about to be written as it’s beginning to look like we’ll be entering what could very well be the post Duncan era . The team has to start looking to the future even though many feel that Tim has two or three years left in him. As of now I’m no so sure. He’s languid and though he’s still got a brilliant basketball mind. His legs are no longer quick as they use to be. Time waits for no man under any circumstances and that’s just the way it is !

Nice write, tophat. Though I picked NO to win the series, I figured SA would come back strong in game six. I’ve seen them do it too many times before. Ironic, what you wrote about the Spurs being a little slow in game five was the opposite in game six. I’ve always put less stock in the home court than most, but all teams, this series included, look like night and day when playing at home versus the road, don’t they? Now, if it holds true to form, the Hornets will win big in game seven. But who knows? The Hornets looked last night like they were just waiting to get to game seven. The Spurs have been there before though, so it won’t be easy.

Popovich can ill afford to be playing chess games with Byron Scott at this juncture. He’s got to get it into the head of the players right from the start that they’ve got to go out there and negate the strengths of the Hornets. And then just play their own game once and for all. If not then they’ll succumb to the Hornets and lose this series outright.
Chess at this juncture is far too dangerous a game to be playing for Popovich.
